Poker Tournament

Have you ever stopped to think about why you’re playing online poker to begin with? What is so enticing about this game for you that you waste days on end playing it and never feel like you’ve had enough? Are you simply in it for the love of the game? If so, don’t bather to read on, because this article is about how money is made in poker tournaments. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to tell you what a fool you are for loving poker… no way. I love poker myself and I do respect those who do too. There are people who are not in it for the game itself though. There are a whole bunch who are in it for the easy money. They figure all they need to do is learn to play and exploit that natural genius they’ve had deep within, as yet undiscovered, for this game. How exactly do these guys figure they’re going to make money playing poker? By winning big pots of course, and many of them too. Well. If that’s how you pictured you’d make money in poker, I’ll have to disappoint you. Poker is like real life in many aspects, and the money-making part is certainly one of them. In real life, it takes a lot of effort and passion to be able to generate money, right? Nobody’s going to walk up to you and tell you “here’s 100 bucks, spend them wisely…” The same thing happens in poker. Nobody is anxious to give up their bankroll so that you can have your fun. They’re after the same thing you are after, namely, to win some money off the other players. A systematic exploitation of small edges you can find in the most unlikely aspects of the game, will turn you into an eventual winner. There’s no need to be angry over losing some bigger-than-average pot, nor to be overly joyous about winning one. This is poker, what comes around, usually goes around too, and at the end of the day, only those shall walk away winners who manage to find enough exploitable small edges and who put in the hard hours to do the actual exploitation. This is what winning poker comes down to. Lots and lots of hard work, pushing some small edge over and over to grind out a few bucks. Examples of such small edges would be: successful blinds play ( in fixed-limit poker this is not a small edge at all) beating the rake via rakeback, losing less than others when in the blinds, taking advantage of poker promotionsand so on… So, having said all that, what’s the best way to grind as much money out of the game of poker as possible? Through tournaments, of course. No, I’m not talking about the freerolls even you neighbor’s dog plays in. Those are a pretty hopeless waste of your time. I’m talking about real-money buyin tourneys, where skill is highly valued, and where the rake has a minimal impact on your game. This is where a skilled player can finally get his paycheck for all the hours of grinding he put into the game. The problem with these games used to be however, that there were simply not enough of them around, and the aforementioned good players simply couldn’t put in enough hours of play under the right circumstances to make it truly worth their while. Players used to travel long distances to play in tourneys and this all but erased the rake-advantage they enjoyed in these games I hope you noticed though that I said “used to be”. Nowadays, with online poker in full bloom, finding tournaments is no longer a problem. Don’t get me wrong, these tourneys aren’t games where you’ll win all the time without much effort. As a matter of fact most of the time you’ll still end up losing. That one time though, when you do win, will make up for all the previous losses lavishly. Some players will never be able to understand that winning is their paycheck for all that time spent playing and losing. No, it’s not a regular, guaranteed, monthly paycheck, but if you can’t live with it, maybe you shouldn’t be a poker player.
