How to make money in online poker?
How to make money in online poker?
People usually do certain things in life in order to achieve something. They go to school to learn, they work in order to earn money and respect. Poker is no exception from under this rule. Sure, some people play it for fun, but you’ll mostly find these guys over at the play-money tables. Most players come to an online poker room for one thing and one thing only: to make money. Whether that is via rakeback or via simply winning, is not a question.
I don’t know if you ever played at a real money table in an online poker room, but it has been my personal experience that it is pretty difficult to generate a constant stream of income at a regular ring table. The high luck-induced fluctuations make it extremely frustrating, and at the end of the day, even if you do beat the game, all you’ll have won are peanuts compared to the effort you put into the whole deal.
The nature of Texas Holdem makes sure rookies stand a chance against sharks in the short term, and frankly, that just makes the game annoying as hell. Even as you make the correct (positive expected value) decision all the time, some rookie just kicks your can big time on a back door flush, or – of all things – a back door gutshot straight. Stuff like that is just not easy to live with. On top of it all, schooling kicks in big time in large ring games. One hand, you get one rookie pulling a move like the above mentioned one on you, the next hand there’s another one. They come and go, and they mostly lose in the long-run, but in the meantime they make life miserable for you. Obviously, every self respecting poker player knows, these guys never actually stood a chance to become winners in the long-run.
Getting stuck in the quagmire of ring game poker is obviously not the most effective way to help these guys give their money up. Sure they will lose, but again, you shouldn’t really care about how much they lose, but much rather about how much you win.
In order to make sure the time that you spend in front of your computer, playing poker, is a good and lucrative investment, you have to find a way to make that long term edge that you have over the newbies, work better.
The best way to do that is to play in tournaments. Experts recommend SNGs, over ring games in terms of value. Besides, have you ever stopped to wonder why tourneys get so much more traffic than ring games do?
As funny as it may seem, playing in freerolls is not the way to go, especially not those freerolls that allow entry to anybody (even if they do not possess a real money account). There’s way too much competition in those tourneys, the play is way too chaotic and the time/prize-pool ratio is really bad, meaning that you have to invest an awful lot of time to win a small sum of money.
Real money MTTs are a much better alternative. Here, the prize pools will be bigger, the competition will adopt a radically different attitude, and there will be a lot fewer people involved in these games.
If you’re going for real value however, SNGs are what you need. Single table tournaments are much easier to beat, yet, they last long enough to allow your long-term edge to kick in. Since this a marathon much rather than a short sprint, and the objective is to survive to be the last man at the table, not to win any particular hand, rookies will no longer be able to mess up your game-plan. Short term setbacks mean nothing in tournament poker.
SNGs are long enough to favor you in that respect, yet – in the same time – they’re also short enough to make playing them worth while.
One thing before I finish though: you’re obviously not the first one to realize the value in SNGs and real money MTTs. The competition you will encounter in these games is not freeroll-level competition, if you know what I mean…
